Understanding audio. Music is music right? Home, car or concert settings its the same right?

No it isnt… not even close.

Picture yourself at a live Jazz performance. Th female lead singer singing whilst sitting on the the side of a big black Grand Piano, while the pianist is striking the ivory keys creating harmonic notes for her to follow. The Percussionist belting out a melody on his gleaming, solid brass saxophone off to the left side of the performance stage. Seemingly hidden behind them all you hear the rhythmic, heart pounding, bass notes of the bass drum and snares from the drummer at the back of the stage.

Bass and its affect on your hearing…

As humans we love bass… those deep low rumbling notes that vibrate the room and deep down to the soul.

It makes our fingers drum the table and our feet stomp the wooden floor with drowned out, indiscernible thuds.

Bass. You don’t miss it until you hear your favorite rendition of a song on a full frequency reproducing system.

No one thinks about the true affects of these low frequency tones on our bodies and the surroundings, other than that it sounds or feels good.

Does Wire composition matter?

Wire. Its just copper. Insulated electron conducting metallic substance insulated with some kind of non conductive sheathing.

Wire is just wire.

Or is it??

Now with today’s technology wire is just not copper strands. With the price of copper on the rise due to the availability of unrecycled copper there are now alternatives. There are bi-metal and alloy conductive materials that do similar jobs as the original material with varying tolerances of performance.

Dj Basics

Djs have been around forever. since the recording of music on the tubes and paper sheets for the pianos and Gramma phones of the distant yester-years, to the still compliant LPs (vinyl records) to the now so popular digital MP4 format of today. To replay music when live performances were unavailable and the enjoyment of sound, music and the feel good vibes of artists recordings is important to the lives of the everyday person.

Below is a Youtube video of the Dj Basics:

Car Audio basics

What does car audio even consist of? Is there really a difference from house or dj systems that are available now days?

Why bother even sending money on upgraded equipment or capabilities? Does the factory stereo from the OEM manufacturer not suffice?

There are partnerships in the automotive industry with car manufacturers and Audio companies such as Pioneer, Alpine, and Bose. These partnerships are create a a specific system geared to a vehicle. They sound great, but have limitations. These systems have amplifiers, some processors, integrated head units and upgraded speakers.

SPL or SQ??

What is the difference between SQ (Sound Quality) and SPL (Sound Pressure Levels) ? What is better? And what do you as a music lover prefer?

These are questions I get asked all the time and in the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference. In this blog I am going to try explain it as well as I possibly can and also give my own personal opinion on this subject!

First of all, SQ (Sound Quality) is about having clarity and fidelity while being able to hear every single frequency of the song nice and clear.

SPL (Sound Pressure Levels) on the other hand is about being loud & measuring cabin pressure in dB’s (Decibels).

The usual trade off in most cases is that you can either have an insanely loud SPL car or a beautiful sounding SQ system, it is possible to build a SQ car-audio system that will be loud but it will never be as loud as say a SPL setup.

SPL car-audio systems are built around what people call a “Burp-Box” which is a Sub-Woofer Box built to get the highest dB rating possible and usually sound absolutely horrible for music! They are designed to do a frequency “Burp” which in most cases is between 50-hz to 80-hz and in some case’s can damage Sub-Woofer’s if music is played on them.

Also there are companies that make SPL Sub-Woofers made for such “Burps” but I am yet to hear one that sounds nice on music!
